The Milwaukee Brewers continued reshaping their roster Sunday by designating Greg Jones for assignment after claiming infielder Braden Shewmake from the Houston Astros for cash considerations. The moves were part of four transactions announced by the club as it continues refining its roster ahead of the All-Star break.

Jones’ departure comes after the Brewers added Shewmake, a former first-round pick who was designated for assignment by Houston when Jeremy Peña returned from the injured list. Shewmake hit .256/.272/.423 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 83 plate appearances for the Astros this season, giving Milwaukee another versatile infield option.
The Brewers, who lead the National League Central with a 59-35 record, have consistently adjusted their roster while maintaining one of baseball’s best records. Sunday’s transactions reflect that approach as the club balances immediate depth with long-term flexibility.

Jones, 28, joined the Brewers organization before the 2026 season and appeared primarily in the minor leagues. The versatile infielder and outfielder was originally selected 22nd overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2019 MLB Draft and now enters the DFA process, where Milwaukee has up to seven days to trade him, place him on waivers or outright him to the minors if he clears.

Shewmake, also 28, brings major league experience after appearing in 29 games with Houston this season. The former Atlanta Braves first-round selection adds depth across the infield for a Brewers club focused on strengthening every area of its roster before the second half.
Sunday’s announcement also included Brandon Woodruff being transferred to the 60-day injured list and right-hander Coleman Crow being reinstated from the 15-day injured list before being optioned to Triple-A Nashville.
For Milwaukee, the series of moves reflects a contender’s mindset. With a comfortable division lead and postseason aspirations, the Brewers continue making calculated roster decisions aimed at keeping the organization as deep and flexible as possible entering the stretch run.
