LeBron James is entering what he called the final chapter of his NBA career, and he made it clear that winning, not money, drove his decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers. After spending weeks weighing his future following the Los Angeles Lakers’ playoff exit, James ultimately decided he still wanted to compete for another championship.

That led him to Philadelphia, where he’ll team up with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and rookie VJ Edgecombe as the 76ers look to contend for an NBA title.
James explained his decision in a message shared on X, saying the opportunity to chase another championship outweighed every other factor.
“This is my last decision,” LeBron wrote on X. “I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship. LeBron James Contract, Salary Details
According to Spotrac, the four-time NBA champion is set to sign a fully guaranteed two-year veteran minimum contract worth $7,946,884. The deal carries an average annual salary of $3,973,442, with the four-time MVP set to earn roughly $3.88 million during the 2026-27 season and about $4.07 million in 2027-28.

The contract is well below what James could have earned, but it gives Philadelphia additional financial flexibility as it builds around its veteran core. One of the biggest details in the deal is a player option for the second season.
That gives James the chance to remain with the 76ers for 2027-28 or return to free agency after one year if he chooses. The agreement also includes the NBA’s standard trade restriction, meaning Philadelphia cannot trade LeBron before Dec. 15, 2026. Spotrac lists the contract’s cap hit at roughly 2.3% of the salary cap in each of the two seasons.
That relatively small figure allows the 76ers to add one of the league’s most accomplished players without making a significant dent in their payroll. For King James, though, the contract was never the headline.
His statement made it clear that this decision came down to one thing. He still believes he has another championship run left, and Philadelphia is where he wants to make that final push.
