Investigators in a Michigan community are working to piece together why eight people, including six school-age children, died in a home in an affluent, tree-shaded neighborhood in Grand Haven, Michigan.

Firefighters responding to reports of a fire in a house on July 24 found heavy smoke and eight people dead inside the home, Capt. Jake Sparks with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office told news media outlets, in a video broadcast by WZZM 13.
Some of the victims had gunshot wounds, and it appears that the fire was set intentionally, said Sparks, describing it as a “complicated scene.”
The children found inside the home ranged in age from approximately 5 to 15, he said.
Michigan State Police arson investigators also are on the scene at the home in the 14900 block of Riverside Trail in Grand Haven Township, assisting in the investigation to identify the cause of the fire and the deaths, he said. Investigators are looking into whether the incident could have been a murder-suicide and expect to release additional details and identifications either over the weekend or on July 27, he said.
Grand Haven Area Public Schools released a statement from Superintendent Kristin Perkowski: “It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge reports of a devastating incident in Grand Haven Township earlier today involving the loss of multiple lives, including several school-aged children.”
“Regardless of the details that may emerge, this is a devastating incident and a tragic loss for our community,” the statement continued.
Sparks said there’s no threat to the public and they weren’t looking for a suspect. Investigators found heavy smoke as well as smoke damage inside the home but no apparent structural damage.

“Bad stuff can happen in any community, and you know, this is a tragic event no matter how you slice it,” Sparks said. Home values in the vicinity on Riverside Trail range from $500,000 to $700,000, according to Zillow.com.
Sparks said the sheriff’s office had no record of previous calls to the home.
Neighbor reflects
On July 24, the scene in the neighborhood along Riverside Trail was “unlike anything” Mark Brininstool had seen in the almost 24 years his family has lived in their home a few doors down from where the fire occurred, he told USA TODAY.
The neighborhood is off the beaten path but was “flipped on its edge yesterday,” Brininstool said.
For the neighbors, there are a lot of unanswered questions, as well as “disbelief, shock and a lot of sorrow,” he said. “The fact there’s a family in its entirety that is no longer, is shared amongst all the neighbors as extremely, extremely sad.”
For Brininstool, it was also a moment for reflection.
A lot of families in the community kind of keep to themselves other than waving as they walk by, including his own, he said. “Maybe if we can take something from this, you know, that’s to be intentional about trying to get to know one another better. I know I’m going to be intentional where possible and double down on those efforts.”
