An independent coffee shop out of Yuba City is now operating inside Compton’s Market, the popular longtime East Sacramento grocery store.

Steele House Coffee is now serving customers inside the decades-old market’s cafe space at 4065 McKinley Blvd.
The shop prides itself in the original and old fashioned flavor of its roasted coffee, said Johnny Daughtery, the manager of the Sacramento location. The coffee house specializes in dark roasts and honors the chocolatey, nutty flavors of down-to-earth coffee, he said.
“A lot of people…they’ve got to have some gimmick,” Daugherty said. “Our gimmick would be that we just try hard to make sure we have good quality coffee and a really good customer experience.”
Steele House opened in downtown Yuba City in 2017 and is owned by Yuba City locals Joe and Regina Steele.
Daugherty, the couple’s friend and a longtime on-and-off employee, took over the Sacramento cafe this summer, he said.

Daugherty said Compton’s Market’s owners, Sunil and Pam Hans, are from Yuba City and often frequented the original Steele House. They approached the coffee shop about moving into Sacramento.
“They were trying to find someone that’d be a good fit,” Daughtery said. “They wanted to find somebody who’d be able to blend with the market’s ecosystem and work with everybody.”
While the coffee shop focuses on classic coffee flavors, its menu also offers sweet latte flavors such as the customer favorite banana cream, as well as butter beer, French toast, honey, lemon meringue and blueberry crumble.
Compton’s Market was founded by Bill Compton in 1957 and grew into a community hub.
It changed hands in 2009 and over the years the current owners have added a deli, a full bar, and now, a coffee shop.

Steele Coffee House is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.
