When the Milwaukee Bucks selected Giannis Antetokounmpo, a skinny kid from Greece with the 15th overall pick in 2013, a kid who had never played top-tier basketball in any European league, many wondered if the Wisconsin-based franchise had made another epic draft blunder.

Barely speaking English at the time, raw to a fault but oozing potential, he had to adapt overnight to a completely different lifestyle than the one he knew on the streets of Athens.
To ease that transition, he had several great veterans by his side. Standing out among them was Caron Butler, no longer the All-Star he was at his peak, but fully committed to being the ultimate mentor to the future franchise icon. Butler openly admitted as much on a recent podcast appearance, recalling a terrifying night from that rookie year.
“We was at a crazy little spot, Club 601. We all thought it was a gunshot. Everybody ducked, but I grabbed him just to protect him. He was special and still is special to me, because he’s like, part of my legacy. He was my young fella. So I gotta always make sure he’s okay,” Butler recalled on “The Thanalysis Show.”
Giannis had a leader beside him who remains like a brother to this day
Butler didn’t hesitate for a second in what felt like a high-risk situation. When everyone in the club thought they heard a gunshot, he acted like a true friend and veteran, shielding his rookie without a second thought.
You can only imagine what was going through the Greek Freak’s mind as he was still adjusting to a new world, or the traumatic toll it could have taken had something truly tragic happened.
Fortunately, he had a leader beside him who remains like a brother to this day. Even though they only shared the floor for 34 games before Butler moved on to the Oklahoma City Thunder, that bond stayed intact.
Butler knew back then that Antetokounmpo was destined for greatness. Time proved him right: Giannis eventually capped his historic run in Milwaukee as an NBA champion, Finals MVP, two-time MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and multi-time All-NBA and All-Star selection, leading the franchise in virtually every statistical category.

Full-circle moment
Now, the duo gets their full-circle moment. Giannis took his talents to South Beach to build on his legendary resume with the Miami Heat, where his rookie-year mentor will be waiting for him.
Butler, who launched his own stellar playing career in Miami, has served as a Heat assistant coach since 2020, a connection that may well have been a key factor in Giannis choosing his next destination.
Their connection never faded, but life has brought them back together. Now, Giannis has a chance to repay his old veteran with a Larry O’Brien trophy, a fitting thank you to the man who was willing to put his own body on the line to protect him when they barely even knew each other.
Basketball writes the most wonderful stories and if this pair wins a championship together in Miami, it will complete one of the greatest full-circle journeys in recent history.
