1 dead when friends struck by motorist while fixing blown tire on Highway 50

Four people who had stopped to repair a flat tire along Highway 50 in Sacramento were struck by a passing vehicle late Sunday, killing one of them.

The four friends were on the right shoulder of eastbound Highway 50 near 34th Street about 11:30 p.m. when a passing vehicle struck them, one of the group told CHP officers, according to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs reviewed by The Sacramento Bee. An officer arriving minutes later reported seeing multiple vehicles on the shoulder and one person on the ground.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was notified shortly before 12:50 a.m., the logs showed. A spokesperson for the CHP’s South Sacramento office was not immediately available.

The Nos. 3 and 4 lanes of eastbound Highway 50 were initially closed, along with the 34th Street off-ramp. Sacramento police were later asked to close the X Street on-ramp. By about 1:53 a.m., the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 lanes had reopened, according to the logs.
