The county’s Board of Education to rename the school in response to reporting published in The New York Times this spring alleging Chavez sexually abused multiple women, including a teenage girl.

The community school, located on West Beamer Street, is overseen by the Yolo County Office of Education. The board invited the community to “suggest names, share what they believe the school’s name should represent, and help inform a Citizens Advisory Committee” through an online survey.

Survey results will be reviewed by a citizens advisory committee, which will select the top two options to present to the board for a final decision. The advisory committee will include at least seven members, with representatives from the student body, school staff and the wider community. Any survey respondent can volunteer for the advisory committee.

Board policy recommends naming schools after things that reflect the geographic area or after a person or group with values that align with the board’s.

The board encouraged input from current and former students and parents, staff and other community members in a news release. The survey also asks what values the school’s new name should represent.

The advisory committee will begin meeting in mid-September and will convene as needed. The committee will submit its top two suggestions to the board at a meeting in October or November.

Momentum to rename public sites honoring Chavez grew quickly after the allegations surfaced. Cities across the region have removed Chavez’s name from public spaces and made rebranding plans, including for Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown Sacramento.

he Davis Joint Unified School District board voted in April to rename Cesar Chavez Elementary School using a similarly community-led process. The board unanimously approved the name Monarca Elementary in June.
