A public art installation celebrating Sacramento’s immigrant communities will go up Monday at the Valley Hi-North Laguna public library.

Sacramento-based artists Jamie Pesquiza Cardenas, Pachia L. Vang and Ren Allathkani collaborated on the mural “Threads of Belonging” that will be showcased on one of the library’s exterior walls.
The mural weaves together Palestinian, Filipino/Ilocano and Hmong textile traditions to reflect the cultural traditions of Sacramento’s immigrant communities.
“Really, it’s about starting this conversation of how do we belong to each other,” Cardenas said.
Artists Cardenas, Vang and Allathkani threaded fibers through a metal base to create patterns that symbolize various motifs of each culture.

“I call this project the magnum opus of my life because I get to do this for my hometown,” Cardenas said. “I’m from South Sac, I’m from Valley High, and stuff like this just doesn’t happen for people like me. So the project’s name is true to its name. It really is this embodiment that we actually are more similar than different.”
With early support from City Councilmember Mai Vang and the city’s Office of Arts and Culture, the project was made possible in part with the help of the National Academy of Design and the Edwin Austin Abbey Memorial Trust Fund for Mural Painting.
The mural’s formal unveiling will be held on Monday, Aug. 31. More information is available at culturethroughcloth.com.
