The San Francisco 49ers made a trade to add a veteran linebacker before their final preseason game Thursday.

The Niners on Sunday night acquired veteran linebacker Deion Jones in exchange for reserve running back Zamir White, a league source confirmed to The Sacramento Bee. The deal was agreed to pending physicals for both players.
The 49ers have dealt with injuries at linebacker, recently losing Nick Martin to a hamstring injury in last Thursday’s exhibition against the Los Angeles Chargers. Additionally, Jalen Graham and Luke Gifford have been missing from practice. White could be used in the final preseason game Thursday against the Las Vegas Raiders.
White was a long shot to make San Francisco’s roster given the returns of Kaelon Black and Jordan James from injury as they battle to back up All-Pro Christian McCaffrey. The 49ers will trim their roster from 90 to 53 players on Aug. 30.

Jones will be considered for a roster spot to back up Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw along with Martin, Graham, Gifford, Garrett Wallow, Tatum Bathune and Larry Worth III. Rookie fifth-round draft pick Jaden Dugger is a lock and appears to have a large role set in his first season.
Jones, 31, signed with the Saints earlier this month looking to continue his career for an 11th season. He worked previously under current 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, making the Pro Bowl with the Atlanta Falcons in 2017. Jones had 11 interceptions in his first five seasons after being drafted in the second round, 52nd overall, in 2016.
Jones played in 17 games last season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and registered 29 tackles. He played 120 snaps on defense (11.5%) and 270 snaps on special teams. He has also spent time with the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers.
