Sacramento’s top news: Newsom’s new label, Yosemite land deal and a union fight

Here’s a rundown of the top stories from Sacramento on Friday.

• Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a new “Made in California” product label program to help consumers identify in-state products. To qualify, businesses must source at least 51% of their workers, raw materials or overhead costs in California. Program fees are waived through the end of the year, and successful applicants will hold their license for two years before renewal. Newsom noted that 89% of in-state manufacturers are small businesses.

• Trump administration officials are reportedly in talks with Nevada-based Kingsbarn Realty Capital to exchange a quarter-mile strip of Yosemite National Park for private California land. Kingsbarn CEO Jeff Pori wants to build a road connecting his 83-acre plot west of the park to a main road within Yosemite, according to reporting by NOTUS. The Department of the Interior denied the claims, saying there has been no political pressure and that any land exchange would be subject to federal laws and environmental review. Sen. Alex Padilla, Rep. Jared Huffman and the Sierra Club vowed to fight the potential deal.

• SEIU Local 1000, California’s largest state worker union, filed a Public Employment Relations Board charge against the California State Lottery for failing to provide complete employee phone numbers and emails. The union says roughly 10 state departments and agencies — including the Department of Motor Vehicles — aren’t providing adequate contact information legally required for outreach. The Lottery didn’t include work locations or phone numbers for all 698 employees and lacked personal cell phone information for nearly 620 of them. Union President Anica Walls called it “a troubling anti-union pattern across state government.”
