Big-name NFL owner with championship pedigree buys MLB’s Los Angeles Angels

Arte Moreno’s tenuous time owning the Los Angeles Angels is coming to an end.

Moreno is selling the team to billionaire Stan Kroenke, whose vast portfolio includes the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and Arsenal F.C. of the English Premier League.

Kroenke Sports and Entertainment announced the acquisition Tuesday after the news was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

“The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market,” Kroenke said in a statement. “We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”

The Angels haven’t made the playoffs on Moreno’s watch since 2014 when they were swept in the divisional series by the Kansas City Royals and haven’t had a winning season since 2015 despite having future Hall of Famers like Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. They’ve also been on a years-long search for a new ballpark.

It was a stark fall from prominence after winning the American League West in five of six seasons from 2004 to 2009.

Kroenke’s teams have had success recently, including Arsenal winning a Premier League title in 2026, the Nuggets winning the NBA Finals in 2023, the Rams winning a Super Bowl in 2022 and the Avalanche hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2022.

The price of the purchase has not been announced, but it’s expected to be in the billions. Kroenke also seems fit to build a new ballpark after privately financing SoFi Stadium, home of the Rams and L.A. Chargers, which is set to host its second Super Bowl in February along with the 2028 Olympics. It hosted eight World Cup games this summer.

Kroenke’s net worth is believed to be roughly $25 billion, according to Forbes and other financial news outlets. His background is in real estate while his wife, Ann Walton Kroenke, is daughter of Walmart founder James Walton.

Moreno purchased the Angels in 2003 from the Walt Disney Company and became the first Mexican-American owner of a major pro sports team in the U.S. But he’s struggled to field a winner despite paying sizable amounts for players, with stars over the years including Ohtani, Trout and Albert Pujols.

Moreno has also alienated portions of the fan base for changing the team’s name from Anaheim Angels in 2005 to Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. They had that name for 10 years before becoming the Los Angeles Angels in 2016 despite playing in Orange County.

The sale is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027.
