The vehicle crash was reported about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday on Florin Road near East Parkway, just west of Highway 99, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man driving a silver Dodge Journey, a small sport utility vehicle, was headed west on Florin in the far right lane, said Officer Michael Harper, a spokesperson for the CHP’s South Sacramento office.

Harper said the Dodge driver possibly suffered a medical emergency and rear-ended another silver vehicle in front of him. The Dodge then turned to the right and drove up on the sidewalk as it continued northwest before the SUV struck the chain-linked fence, where it came to rest.

A CHP officer working nearby heard the vehicle crash and responded to the scene. Harper said the driver in the vehicle that was rear-ended briefly stopped but left without providing any information.

The CHP officer found the driver in the Dodge in the driver’s seat still wearing his seat belt in the driver’s seat. Harper said the driver was unresponsive, and the officer removed the driver and began to perform CPR until Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District medics arrived.

The driver was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2 p.m., Harper said.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the name and age of the man who died after his family has been notified.
