The California Highway Patrol recommended motorists use Folsom Boulevard to bypass the closure, which followed a fatal shooting involving officers on the freeway just west of Hazel Avenue shortly after midnight.
Slow-and-go traffic was seen stacking up on southbound Highway 50 stretching to Prairie City Road by 7 a.m.
CHP Officer Andrew Brown said drivers also could take Greenback Lane west through Orangevale and Citrus Heights to Sunrise Boulevard. Traffic, however, was heavy along southbound Sunrise Boulevard and in both directions of Hazel at 7 a.m.
The Hazel slowdowns were in part due to a separate crash on Hazel Avenue at Gold Country Boulevard, where a driver was killed about 1:15 a.m. in a solo-vehicle crash. CHP logs showed that crash scene cleared up just before 7 a.m.
Here are some other options for motorists trying to avoid the Highway 50 closure:

• Drivers approaching Sacramento County from El Dorado County can exit Highway 50 at East Bidwell Street, head south and connect with White Rock Road. White Rock runs west through Folsom and Rancho Cordova to Zinfandel Drive.
• Motorists starting in Folsom also can take Greenback Lane west toward Sunrise Boulevard. Drivers can continue farther west toward Interstate 80 and use the Capital City Freeway to reach downtown Sacramento. Madison Avenue provides another east-west option.
• For drivers headed to Elk Grove or other areas of southern Sacramento County, White Rock Road provides access to Grant Line Road. Motorists can take Grant Line south to major east-west roads including Jackson Road, Florin Road and Calvine Road.
Drivers should expect heavier-than-normal traffic on alternate routes while the freeway remains closed.
The CHP and Caltrans had not provided an estimated time for reopening westbound Highway 50.
