The Carolina Panthers have much more talent right now than they had in previous seasons.

The team addressed most of its biggest needs this offseason, like an edge rusher, linebacker, and offensive line. However, the tight end spot is one that has been a question mark for years and doesn’t appear to have a quick fix.
That could all change after this season, though. There’s a 2027 free agent who could fix the team’s tight end woes and completely transform the offense.
Sam LaPorta Would Be Perfect Addition for Panthers
Sam LaPorta is headed for free agency after the season. The most recent reports indicate that the Lions are still interested in an extension for LaPorta, but not much progress has been made.
If LaPorta actually hits free agency, he would undoubtedly be one of the most sought-after weapons. The tight end burst onto the scene as a rookie, catching 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. LaPorta earned a Pro Bowl selection after that dominant showing.
The tight end impressed again in 2024, catching 60 passes for 726 yards and seven touchdowns. LaPorta’s production took a step back in 2025 as he only played in nine games, but he’s predicted to be one of the best at his position again in 2026.

Zach Roberts of Panthers OnSI also thinks LaPorta would be a perfect fit in Carolina.
“The Panthers have five tight ends on the roster, and not one of them is a long-term option. Mitchell Evans, Tommy Tremble, and Ja’Tavion Sanders are all backup-level tight ends. Feleipe Franks is a special teamer, and Darren Waller has already retired once,” Roberts explained.
It’s true that none of these options are inspiring. Waller could end up being productive in 2026, but he’s definitely not a long-term fix.
“When healthy, LaPorta is one of the best tight ends in the NFL. He would be easily the best tight end in Carolina since Greg Olsen. The Detroit Lions have a ton of big contracts to deal with, perhaps including Branch, which makes LaPorta an option on the market,” Roberts added.
If the Panthers were able to trot out LaPorta, Tetairoa McMillan, and Jalen Coker, it would easily be Bryce Young’s best supporting cast.
