The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday night from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the Yuba City limits.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to remove impaired drivers from the road and improve public safety. The checkpoint location was selected based on data showing areas with a history of impaired driving-related crashes, deputies said.
A previous checkpoint was conducted May 1 in Yuba City.
In addition to alcohol, drivers may be impaired by prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana. Although medicinal and recreational marijuana use is legal in California, driving under the influence of cannabis remains illegal.

Drivers arrested for DUI face serious consequences, including an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and a suspended driver’s license for a first offense, according to the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office.
The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
