The Oregon Ducks suffered the most stunning upset of the young season, losing as 24-point favorites to Oklahoma State, a team that had been riding a 12-game losing streak.
Appearing on The Matt Barrie Show, Finebaum admonished Lanning for his “inexplicable” game management in the fourth quarter against the Cowboys in yesterday’s loss. He warned that Lanning’s last three games (Indiana in the Peach Bow, last week vs Boise State and Saturday against Oklahoma State) have been among the worst of his career and he needs to get it together.
“I don’t know what to say I mean I sat here last week with you making excuses for Dan Lanning because he’s always been my my guy, he’s going to be the next ‘one’ and you think about the Indiana game and then the Boise game and now this,” Finebaum said. “I mean you can’t put three worse games together and (he’s) lucky that he didn’t lose last week, where his season might already be a complete dumpster fire. It’s not far from it, but I still believe he’s a good enough coach, and Dante Moore somehow, you know, can maybe get a transformation of some sort, but that’s one of the most inexplicable finishes to a game.
“Not so much the way it ended, just the whole idea that one of the worst programs in America. And it was what a year ago next week that Gundy was fired? I mean, I just don’t think there’s anything to compare it to. There’s no way you lose to Tulsa in your first game and then beat a team that was a pretty trendy pick to win the national championship.”

Stunner in Stillwater
Everyone was expecting Oregon to run Oklahoma State right out of Boone Pickens Stadium. But despite being 24-point favorites, there really was never much of a moment where the offense got any momentum.
Their first five drives ended in punts and turnovers on downs. Meanwhile, the Cowboys scored on four of their first seven drives and 14 of the Ducks’ 17 first half points came off of Oklahoma State turnovers.
In the second half, Oklahoma State eliminated the turnovers and started being more efficient on their drives. Oregon, meanwhile, committed three turnovers and only held the lead for a few minutes of the fourth quarter before losing 39-31.
The Ducks entered that game as the No. 6 team in the country and will surely drop out of the top-10 entirely after this one.
