When the Kansas City Chiefs take the field at Arrowhead Stadium Monday night for their 2026 opener against the Denver Broncos, it will mark 14 seasons that head coach Andy Reid and tight end Travis Kelce have been together in K.C.

After 14 years as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid, 68, was hired by the Chiefs in January 2013. Three months later, the team took Kelce in the third round of the draft. In 13 years together, Reid and Kelce have helped the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl five times, winning three.
Reid has 307 career victories, fourth on the all-time list behind Don Shula (347), Bill Belichick (333) and George Halas (324). Kelce, who turns 37 next month, is currently eighth on the NFL all-time list with 1,080 receptions. He needs 23 more catches to pass three Hall of Famers and move into fifth all-time.
Most observers believe that Kelce’s first season after marrying Taylor Swift will be his final season in the NFL, though nothing has been announced. As for Reid, he’s got three seasons remaining on his current contract and he hasn’t expressed any interest in stepping away.

“Bet you a cheeseburger” is a common refrain from Reid, so when I had a chance to talk to the coach a few weeks ago, I asked him this question: If you had to bet a cheeseburger, who’s retiring first — you or Travis Kelce?
“Oh, my goodness,” Reid said. “How about if I just stay in the middle? How about if we both go out together? How’s that?”

Considering that they came to the Chiefs together, it would be fitting if they were to retire together. That said, Reid isn’t ready to say when that might happen.
“Yeah, so I’ve still got a few years on this contract,” said Reid. The coach also noted that his veteran tight end had a strong training camp and looks like he is still a valuable offensive weapon.
“Travis, he came back in phenomenal shape,” Reid said. “So I know people have said it’s his last year and all this, but he has looked great.
“And as long as he can keep that up and go, we might be able to check out together down the road there.”
