The Milwaukee Brewers avoided a major concern with Garrett Mitchell after the outfielder was removed early from Sunday’s 4-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

Mitchell left the game after going 0-for-2 with a walk, but manager Pat Murphy later explained that the decision was precautionary. Mitchell was dealing with elevated blood sugar levels rather than a new baseball-related injury.
Curt Hogg reported the update on X after the game, providing clarity on why Mitchell was removed.
Pat Murphy said Garrett Mitchell left today’s game because of low blood sugar. Day game after night games are tougher in that realm, and the trainers recommended taking him out.

The Brewers’ training staff noticed Mitchell’s blood sugar was rising and recommended taking him out of the game. Murphy also pointed to the difficulty of going from a night game to a day game and said the team continues to look for better solutions to help Mitchell manage the issue.
Mitchell has Type 1 diabetes, which he was diagnosed with at nine years old. He has continued playing at the major league level while carefully managing the condition throughout games and during travel.

The 2026 season has been a productive one for Mitchell. He has appeared in 134 games while hitting .268 with a .358 on-base percentage, 11 home runs, 65 RBI and 14 stolen bases.
Mitchell also showed his impact earlier in the series, hitting a grand slam Friday against Cincinnati. His production and defense have made him an important part of a Brewers team that has already secured a postseason spot.
Milwaukee clinched a playoff berth Friday with a 20-0 win over the Reds, giving the club its eighth postseason appearance in nine years. The Brewers entered Sunday with a 93-57 record, the best mark in the National League.
With October approaching, the Brewers have plenty to play for as they chase the top seed in the NL. Getting Mitchell through Sunday’s scare without a new injury is an encouraging development for Milwaukee.
