SAN FRANCISCO – Rafael Devers won’t play another game this season. Neither will Matt Chapman, Casey Schmitt, Daniel Susac or Harrison Bader – among many, many others. Willy Adames hasn’t been ruled out for the rest of the year, but he’s unlikely to play again.

So, with the season all but over, would the Giants consider shutting down Logan Webb for the remainder of the year?
“I think it’s a conversation at this point,” said manager Tony Vitello after the Giants’ 6-4 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday. “With everybody that’s a potential starter is just trying to figure out what we want out of each of those guys and how we’re trying to push them as far as pitch count or times they go out there. Or, with the remaining outings we have left, what we would do with each one of those guys. So, we’ll see. It’s certainly a conversation with him.”
There aren’t many compelling reasons why the 29-year-old Webb should throw another pitch in 2026.
The Giants were officially eliminated from postseason contention last week, and they’d been unofficially eliminated for several months beforehand. Webb has no chance at reaching 200 innings for a fifth straight season, and he’ll finish this year with his worst ERA since becoming a regular starter regardless of how well he throws the rest of the way.
Webb, who allowed six runs over five innings to the Padres on Sunday, offered a short response when asked about the possibility.
“I don’t know. Once (Vitello) talks to me, I’ll let you guys know,” Webb said.
Regardless of whether or not Webb pitches the rest of the year – his final two starts would both be against the Dodgers – this will go down as his worst statistical season since establishing himself in the majors. Over 27 starts, Webb has a 4.31 ERA and 3.46 FIP. If those hold, they’d be his worst marks since 2020. Webb also landed on the injured list for the first time since 2021 in May and missed a month.
This season hasn’t been without its highs. Upon returning from the injured list, Webb had a 0.71 ERA over five starts in June and won National League Pitcher of the Month. Shortly after earning that honor, Webb was named an All-Star for the third time in his career, representing San Francisco along with former Giant Luis Arraez. Webb also joined Hall of Famer Juan Marichal as the only other Giants pitcher to start five straight Opening Days since the team moved to San Francisco.

On the flip side, Webb has had some of the worst clunkers of his career. He allowed five runs over 2 2/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Aug. 21, then surrendered a career-worst nine runs over two innings on Sept. 1 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Webb has allowed 23 runs over his last five starts, the most he’s given up in a five-start stretch in his career.
Webb has been asked multiple times this season if playing for the United States in the World Baseball Classic affected his performance. The tournament resulted in an abnormal spring training for Webb as he threw high-intensity innings earlier than normal.
When the subject was brought up after he allowed nine runs over two innings in Pittsburgh, Webb replied, “I have no clue.” It’s an impossible question to answer, but there’s no shortage of pitchers who have underperformed or gotten hurt (or, in Webb’s case, both) after participating in the tournament.
If the Giants shut Webb down for the season, they should still have enough arms to get them through the rest of the season.
Along with Landen Roupp and Blade Tidwell, the Giants could patch together a rotation or piggyback situation with pitchers such as Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson, Yunior Marte, Cesar Perdomo and Anthony Molina. Marte should get another start before the year is over after pitching five impressive innings of relief in back-to-back appearances.
“Depending on when you would walk in the office, if you were going to eavesdrop – Marte, Tugboat – there’s a variety of ideas being thrown out,” Vitello said.
