A mail carrier is set to appear in federal court after being accused of having more than 8,500 pieces of mail he never delivered, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors said the 53-year-old postal worker was arrested Friday after he was indicted for allegedly keeping and failing to deliver the mail from his Fresno County route, according to an office spokesperson. His exact route was not immediately available from the court record or a spokesperson.
Prosecutors said the mail carrier was found to have mail he kept in August and September of 2024. The more than 8,500 pieces of correspondence included sensitive documents, such as financial and insurance records, medical documents, tax records and utility bills, prosecutors said.
The U.S. Postal Service spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment on potential delays in the route or the fate of the correspondence.

The worker was placed on leave and resigned his position as a carrier shortly after, the news release said. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
He faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000, according to prosecutors.
