University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari says that among the players currently in the NBA, the one who makes the most sense to become the next politician from the association would be Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry.
“But he would never do it,” he said. “But he would be good because he cares about people. Really bright, energetic, has his beliefs and what he believes in; he’s going after. He’d be great.”

Steph won the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award
Calipari’s choice comes as no surprise, as Curry is recognized as one of the most charitable and community-focused players currently in the NBA. Since 2019, he’s invested heavily in the future of Oakland’s youth via the Eat.Learn.Play Foundation, which earned him the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award at the 12th annual Sports Humanitarian Awards.
In addition to his own foundation, Steph supports other charities such as the Animal Rescue Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Nothing But Nets, Partnership for a Healthy America, United Nations Foundation, and the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
Curatry has also used his platform to voice his opinions on civic and political issues, like encouraging U.S. voters to participate in elections and speaking out about voting rights. The Golden State Warriors legend is also firm in his beliefs, publicly supporting Joe Biden in 2020 and Kamala Harris in 2024.
When asked what political position Steph would make the most sense in, Coach Cal replied, “Whatever he wants,” and also told the reporter he wants a post in Steph’s cabinet if he aims for POTUS.

“If he’s president, I want to be the ambassador to the Vatican. That’d be good,” Coach Cal concluded.

Steph says he wants to create meaningful change
Curiously, in 2024, CBS asked Steph whether he had any interest in politics and whether he would consider running for public office after he retired from the game; Curry did not say it outright, but it was clear the idea meant something to him.
“Maybe, I have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good in the way that I can,” Curry said. “So, if that’s the way to do it, then… I’m not going to say the presidency, but if politics is a way that you can create meaningful change or if there’s another way outside of politics.”
However, while Steph might make a lot of sense as a politician, that may have to wait a little longer. At 38, Curry is still one of the best players in today’s NBA. And even at that advanced age, the Dubs are willing to give him another maximum contract extension that will keep him in the Bay through the 2028-29 season.
