A bone discovered on a Humboldt County beach in March was linked to a man who went missing from a fishing boat more than 25 years earlier, authorities said.

DNA testing identified the bone as belonging to Jonathan Raxa, 37, who vanished after going overboard from a commercial fishing vessel in Humboldt Bay in 1999, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said in a Wednesday news release.
Raxa and three others were washed overboard when a rogue wave tore the pilothouse off the vessel on Dec. 14, 1999, deputies said. The other three were rescued, but Raxa could not be found.
In March, deputies responded to Centerville Beach, where they found a human bone identified as a sacrum, a bone that connects the spine to the hip bones.

DNA from the bone matched Raxa’s DNA, deputies said. His son had provided a sample.
“This case highlights the importance of collecting and preserving DNA samples from family members of missing persons,” officials said in the release.
