SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks managed to beat goalie Carter Hart just once in regulation time and just once in the shootout in a 2-1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday at SAP Center.

Ivar Stenberg scored in the shootout, but goalie Yaroslav Askarov allowed goals to Matyas Sapovaliv and Braedan Bowman as the Sharks fell to 0-1-1 in the preseason.
The Sharks took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal at the 4:18 mark of the third period as Michael Misa tapped a loose puck beside the net past Hart, who finished with 28 saves. Alexander Wennberg and Dmitry Orlov had the assists.
Askarov finished with 22 saves in his first preseason game. Two of Askarov’s more notable saves came midway through the second period: he made a glove save on Jonas Rondbjerg’s close-range chance and a pad save shortly after on a Jackson Hallum breakaway a few seconds later, as he got behind the Sharks’ defense.
Vegas tied the game with an even-strength goal at the 8:22 mark of the third. Alexander Holtz found some space in the slot, took a pass from Tanner Laczynski and beat a screened Askarov to the blocker side with a quick shot.

The game marked Stenberg’s NHL preseason debut. He and linemates Wennberg and Collin Graf combined to register five of the Sharks’ 15 shots on goal, and three of the team’s five high danger chances, through two periods.
Stenberg was part of the Sharks’ top power-play unit and was on the ice at the start of overtime when San Jose had a brief man advantage.
“We don’t need him to go out and be someone he’s not tonight,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said of Stenberg before Tuesday’s game. “Just play his game, and we’ll make some corrections as we go, but we want him to get comfortable on the North American sheet.”
The Sharks finish the preseason with games against the Anaheim Ducks at home on Thursday and the Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday before finalizing their 23-man roster. San Jose’s regular season opener is Oct. 1 at home against the Florida Panthers.
