Once a promising site for potential temporary homeless shelters, mixed-use development or even a $50 million sports complex, the city of Sacramento is looking to sell the 102-acre Meadowview property.

The Sacramento City Council will vote Tuesday on declaring the property located about 2 miles east of Interstate 5 “surplus land,” which would mark the first step in the process of selling it to a private developer.
The city acquired the property for $12.3 million in 2022. The property was once used as a California Highway Patrol testing track but has been vacant for many years.
Despite heavy community interest and sustained efforts by Councilmember Mai Vang to materialize a project, the infrastructure needs of the empty dirt lot proved city development of the plot prohibitively expensive. In January the city released a “Request for Expressions of Interest” — a tool used to gauge private development interest.
According to city documents released Thursday, responses to the RFEI indicated that disposing of the site would represent the most “practical and financially viable strategy” for the city.

If the council votes to declare the land surplus, there would be a 60-day period during which interested parties could express their interest in purchasing the land, followed by a 90-day period of negotiations. The council would then vote to approve the project in summer to early fall.
“I look forward to this next step in moving the 102-Acre project forward and continuing the work to bring our community’s vision to life,” Vang said in a statement.
“District 8 residents have invested years into shaping what these 102 acres can become, and as we enter this next phase, I urge my colleagues to join me in committing to keeping community voices and our co-created Guiding Principles at the core of this development.”
