Cody Gakpo recently opened up about the $106.00 million (£80 million) transfer to Manchester City that collapsed in the final hours of the 2026 summer transfer window.

The Liverpool star was targeted by Manchester City as a major addition to their attack, and Gakpo had reportedly agreed to personal terms with the club, choosing City over interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
Liverpool were initially open to selling the Dutch forward and had also signed Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain to strengthen their attack.
Now, the 27-year-old has finally spoken about the failed transfer as well as the difficult period he went through following the loss of his unborn child.
Cody Gakpo Opens Up on Difficult Summer
“I don’t know if you want to go there because it doesn’t make any sense now to speak about this,” he said.
Gakpo admitted that the past few months had been difficult not only for his family but also for him personally as he dealt with everything surrounding football and his life.
“But it was a difficult summer for me, and my family, and everything surrounding football and life. So, yes, I just let it come, and it ended how it ended.”
Regarding his move to Manchester City, he chose to focus on what he could control rather than worry about the uncertainty.

“I cannot choose. I have to just try to do what I’m good at, and that’s playing football. I can be very worried about everything that could happen, or that didn’t happen, or whatever, but that wouldn’t help the situation, would it,” he added.
Gakpo suffered a heartbreaking loss during his time at the World Cup with the Netherlands when he and his partner, Noa, lost their unborn child, Elijah.
“It’s a very long story. The summer was very tough regarding everything. I just let everything be and see how it came and it worked out in this way, which now it is what it is. I just want to enjoy my life with my family and friends, and my life playing football with my team-mates here and at the club.”
More recently, the 27-year-old scored a spectacular goal in a 1-1 draw against Germany on Thursday, helping his team secure a last-minute equalizer.
Gakpo has chosen to stay away from things he cannot control and instead focus on what happens on the pitch and remains an important player as Liverpool look to put together a strong season under new manager Andoni Iraola.
“We have to do the things we can control to the best of our ability. That’s the only thing I can do and the rest is out of our hands. If I have no control over the situation, I will not worry. I just do my job.”
