Incumbent Democrat Angelique Ashby is running for reelection in the state Senate’s 8th District representing Sacramento and Elk Grove. Republican Susan Mason is running against her.

The district is located in the center of the Sacramento metropolitan area, consisting of the state capital of Sacramento and several of its surrounding suburbs, including Rio Linda, McClellan Park, North Highlands, Vineyard, Rosemont, Florin and Elk Grove.
Ashby won 63.3% of votes in the primary race, while Mason won 32.4% and Linda Roberts of the Peace and Freedom Party won 4.3%.
Who is running to represent the 8th District?
Mason has been endorsed by the Sacramento County Republican Party, but does not have a campaign website and did not have a campaign committee as of the end of 2025.
In 2022, Ashby became the first woman elected to represent Sacramento in the state Senate in more than 20 years. She was named majority leader in December.

Before joining the Legislature, Ashby served on the Sacramento City Council for 12 years, as the sole woman for more than half of her tenure. As a city council member, Ashby secured funding for schools, community centers, parks and fire stations.
After becoming a single mom at 20 years old, Ashby worked full time and attended the University of California, Davis. She went on to earn a law degree from the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law and create a consulting firm with her father to provide opportunities to foster youth, parolees, incarcerated women and other underserved populations.
As a senator, her priorities include supporting economic development, bettering police and community relations, securing funding for educational programs and passing policies for affordable housing, according to her campaign website. Ashby also strives to protect the planet and those most impacted by the climate crisis, invest in arts and entertainment and advocate for women’s issues.
