Any suggestion that the Folsom Bulldogs would stomp their way to another Sierra Foothill League championship took a bit of a pause last Friday night.

The Sacramento Bee top-ranked Bulldogs needed two overtimes to squeeze and muscle past No. 4 Rocklin, 29-23, in an SFL opener as Cal-bound quarterback Brody Rudnicki scored the two extra-period touchdowns. That down-to-the-wire outcome may be an indicator on how tight this league race will be.
To compete with Folsom, teams must chew up clock, match the Bulldogs in intensity and hold onto the ball. Rocklin did that for most of the game and had a shot to win it in the second overtime.
Folsom has won 78 of its last 80 league games, including a stretch in the Delta League before joining the best league in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section before the 2014 season. The SFL this season stands as the best and deepest in Northern California. Beating Rocklin extended Folsom’s SFL streak to 24 and its home winning streak on the blue field to 17.
Folsom visits No. 8 Granite Bay this week.
No. 2 Oak Ridge rallied to top No. 5 Del Oro 26-20 last week at home as Nick Johnson passed for three touchdowns. Jack Granrud intercepted three passes to key a defense that includes play-making linebacker Justen Womack.
The Trojans of El Dorado Hills now take on Rocklin in Placer County in what figures to be another smash-mouth, joyous occasion.
No. 6 Jesuit is 5-0 after topping Granite Bay 35-0 in an SFL opener as Jeremiah Brannon passed for 173 yards and three touchdowns, hitting speedster Kwanna Smith twice. Jesuit visits No. 11 Whitney of Placer County on Friday to take on a Wildcats team that is off to its best start since 2008 under first-year coach Brian Brickey and stars such as versatile senior Cash Stevens.
Inderkum bounces back
After taking on state-ranked No. 1 Santa Margarita and Folsom in back-to-back weeks and dropping those titanic nonleague matches to a pair of defending CIF state champions by a combined 97-0, No. 12 Inderkum bounced back with an inspired effort in Shingle Springs.
In beating No. 21 Ponderosa 48-13, the Tigers made it clear that they aim to win the Capital Valley Conference in what should be a terrific race with No. 9 Woodcreek, a defending CIF section champion.

Against Ponderosa, Brody Cole passed for 239 yards and three touchdowns, and he rushed nine times for 137 yards and two scores, including a 78-yarder. Cole, from a long line of football players and coaches in his family, hit Jeremiah Payne for two scoring strikes as Inderkum improved to 2-3.
Monterey Trail mows on
No. 10 Monterey Trail of the Elk Grove Unified School District has not lost a league game in nine seasons, devouring all comers in the Delta League, then the Metro League and again in the Delta as realignment has moved the school around.
In steaming past Elk Grove 55-32, the Mustangs rushed for 449 yards behind a deep and versatile offensive line that features Sergio Salazar, Jaden Calvan, Ethen Folau, Damian Romero, Elijah Ames, Onya Ogbodo and Jordan Wynne.
Xander McKee rushed for 191 yards and two scores for the Mustangs, Nigel Flowers had 226 total yards and a score, and Viliami Kefu rushed for 110 yards and three scores and hit Brent Minnifield Jr. for two touchdown passes.
Lincoln Zebras bound into Top 25
Lincoln bounds into these rankings at No. 19 after the Zebras of Placer County moved to 4-1 with a dominating 46-0 effort over Marysville in a Pioneer Valley League opener.
Coached by Allen Berg, the Zebras are proof that old schools can still achieve. Lincoln impressed in defeat on defense in its 13-0 loss to No. 11 Whitney on Sept. 4.
Against Marysville, Mason Volzer passed for 385 yards and four touchdowns, including a school-record 97-yarder to Zach Mosby. He also hit Tracy Gracey for two scoring strikes. Joe Pomales rushed for 89 yards and three scores and the defense held Marysville to 92 total yards. Diego Cevas, a safety, had 13 tackles and defensive lineman Greysen Vandershrier had six tackles, three of them for loss.
