There is a lot of football yet to be played this NFL season, but through three games, the San Francisco 49ers look like an absolute juggernaut.

They hold a 3-0 record, and while there were some tense moments in the fourth quarter of their game versus the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, they responded with a touchdown every time they needed to, resulting in a 36-30 victory. They have the league’s second-highest scoring offense, and they also rank second in the percentage of their drives that have ended in a score at 59.3%.
Touchdowns have come quickly and frequently for the Niners to start the season, and they have come at a rate that the league hasn’t seen in many years.
San Francisco is scoring touchdowns more frequently than any other NFL team
Per Doug Clawson of CBS Sports, through three games, San Francisco leads the NFL in the percentage of drives that have ended with a touchdown at 48.1%. That is the highest rate in that category through three games since 2000.
As Clawson pointed out, five of the top seven teams of all time in that specific category (highest touchdown percentage through three games) saw their starting quarterback win that season’s MVP award.

49ers QB Brock Purdy is certainly starting to make the case that he could be deserving of the MVP award this year. Through three games, he has completed 72.3% of his passing attempts and has thrown for 789 yards. He’s tied for the most touchdown passes with nine and leads everyone with a 133.1 passer rating, an average of 11.1 adjusted yards gained per pass attempt and a 10.8% touchdown rate.
The national media, which has downplayed Purdy’s stats and overall performance at every turn over the last few years, may be just starting to wake up to the fact that he’s an excellent and perhaps a truly elite quarterback.
The Niners are also leading everyone in third-down conversion rate at 63% and a red zone touchdown percentage of 90%. In other words, they’re in volcano mode on the offensive side of the football.
Their offense will start to be tested when they face the Denver Broncos this Sunday and the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks the following weekend. But if they continue to rack up wins without experiencing much of an offensive drop-off against the NFL’s better defenses, they will start to establish themselves as front-running contenders for this season’s Vince Lombardi Trophy.
