Pittsburgh had been dealing with a standoff with Porter since training camp, but the two sides ultimately could not reach a long-term contract extension. With negotiations at an impasse, the Steelers decided to move on and trade their former second-round pick.

The compensation details continue to emerge, but the Steelers appear to have received at least a second-round pick in return. It remains unclear whether the package includes additional compensation or whether Pittsburgh is sending other assets to Dallas. Regardless, the trade ends a situation that had lingered for months.

Porter had clearly expressed his dissatisfaction with how contract negotiations unfolded, and he now reunites with fellow 2023 draft classmate Broderick Jones, who was also traded to the Cowboys earlier this season.

How Did We Get Here With Steelers, Porter?

This ultimately became the most likely path once Porter began missing games. Pittsburgh allowed the situation to continue, and it became increasingly clear that a trade was possible once speculation surrounding his future began to grow.

Porter’s approach throughout the situation closely resembled teammate Jalen Ramsey’s strategy in 2019 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Like Porter, Ramsey held out amid a mysterious injury before the Jaguars eventually traded him to the Los Angeles Rams. While the two situations stemmed from different circumstances, they ultimately produced the same result.

The Steelers couldn’t meet Porter’s lofty contract demands, and Pittsburgh effectively shut down negotiations after Week 1.

Next Man Up

The Steelers already have their next man up in Asante Samuel Jr., who has been working in the starting secondary throughout the season. Although Daylen Everette stepped in during Week 3, Samuel will likely remain the starter moving forward.

Don’t be surprised if Everette receives more opportunities and increased snaps, though. The rookie has impressed throughout the offseason and preseason and has made the most of his limited opportunities during the regular season.

Pittsburgh also remains high on cornerback Doneiko Slaughter, who currently sits on the practice squad. However, his role likely won’t be as significant as Everette’s or Samuel’s early on.

The Steelers will undoubtedly miss Porter’s talent, but Patrick Graham has gotten solid production from his secondary through the first few weeks of the season. Now, that depth will face an even bigger test moving forward.
