If the San Francisco 49ers are going to truly be as good as they have looked through Week 3 when it matters most, they’re going to have to get relatively healthy and stay relatively healthy. Of course, that is something they have failed to do going back to Super Bowl LVIII, when off-ball linebacker Dre Greenlaw tore his Achilles while running onto the field from the sideline.

They have already lost many starters and rotation players since training camp this year to injury. On Sunday, wide receiver Mike Evans, left tackle Trent Williams and Greenlaw suffered ailments that forced them to exit the Niners’ 36-30 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
All three of them missed practice on Wednesday, along with Nick Bosa (calf), defensive end Keion White (hamstring), wideout KhaDarel Hodge (knee) and defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. (ankle), per Nick Wagoner of ESPN. Running back Christian McCaffrey had a veteran day.
As decimated as the Niners’ defensive line has become due to injury, they did welcome one key defensive lineman back from injury on Wednesday.
San Francisco may be just starting to become healthier
Mykel Williams, the No. 11 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, tore his ACL in Week 9 of last season and has been out since. He started this season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, but he was back at practice on Wednesday, albeit in a limited capacity.

Defensive end Romello Height, who suffered a broken hand in Week 2 versus the Miami Dolphins and didn’t play in Week 3, was also a limited participant on Wednesday.
Williams wasn’t terribly productive last season, as he recorded four tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, one sack and 20 total tackles (11 solo) in nine games. But his potential still seems to be intact, and he can play both on the edge and as the defensive tackle on the interior.
San Francisco recently brought in Matt Judon, a four-time Pro Bowler, to try to fill the void created on its defensive line by all its injuries. Judon is 34 years of age and isn’t the same player he was just two or three years ago, but he could perhaps help out in at least a limited capacity.
The addition of Judon and Williams to that banged-up defensive line could act as a shot in the arm, especially as the team prepares to play the Denver Broncos this Sunday and the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks the following Sunday.
