Number of California high school students taking SAT for college jumps by 12.6%

More college-bound California high school students took the SAT exam than in previous years — a 12.6% increase, the College Board said.

Nearly 139,000 California students in the Class of 2026 took the SAT, the organization said in a Tuesday news release. It’s the largest year-over-year increase in at least three years.

Nearly 40% of the state’s AP exam-takers used a fee reduction program to access college-level coursework, the College Board said.

More than 15,500 more students took the SAT than the Class of 2025, a larger gain than in any other state, the organization said.

“Today’s students enter a college application landscape with differing scholarship and admissions testing policies,” said Priscilla Rodriguez, College Board’s senior vice president of college readiness assessments. “Taking the SAT allows students to show what they’ve learned, keep their options open, and put their best foot forward.”

Six University of California and California State University campuses, including UC Davis, are among the top 10 schools where California students sent their scores, the College Board said.
