Summer, it seems, is still with us.
It’s not all that uncommon to see October high temperatures across the Central Valley in the 90s — any warmer than average pattern will do that. What is less common is just how much hotter these temperatures are and how long they have been sticking around.

After rising into the 90s last week, Sacramento topped out with a blazing high of 99 degrees on Saturday, while other parts of the Central Valley breached 100 degrees (looking at you Redding). Further towards the coast, Santa Rosa hit 102 on Friday while San Francisco even hit 90 degrees!
The most intense temperatures though were not found in Northern California or the Central Valley, but down towards Los Angeles.
Extraordinarily hot temperatures above 100 degrees roasted the region down through San Diego which hit a record 105 degrees, with many other spots setting new records for similar highs. While the heat wave is to blame, the offshore breeze bringing dry air off the mountains is the ultimate factor for these temperatures that would be hot any time of year for the region.
Southern California will still remain in the triple digits over the next few days, and the 90s for the rest of the week, but temperatures these hot are a real heat stress. Wherever you are in the state, treat these temperatures with caution, as they do make the usual outdoor activities this time of year more of a challenge.
A heat advisory remains in effect for the entire Central Valley and Central Coast through Wednesday evening. High temperatures are expected to peak Monday and Tuesday across the region, but remain hot through Thursday.
High temperatures will be near daily records this week
For the Central Valley, most temperatures this week are not set to break records, but they will come awfully close.

High temperatures across the entire valley will sit in the upper 90s for most of the coming week. The Delta breeze won’t be coming to save anyone either — it can actually easier to get that going in summer when the sun is higher in the sky. So through Thursday, this is where places like Sacramento and Fresno will be — the burner.
These temperatures are around 15 degrees above average for early October. Having one day of these hot temperatures would be a memorably hot day in its own right, but more than a week? That is the forecast, and we just have to deal with it for a bit longer.
Cool down set to arrive this weekend
Good news if you are ready for some more autumnal weather, that is set to slide in this weekend.
Expect to feel the winds shifting in Northern California Friday, and Saturday for Southern California, as cooler air finally sweeps in. Through the upper atmosphere, a trough of lower pressure is set to dislodge our heat wave and quickly usher in a sea change.
By Saturday, high temperatures will plummet down to the low 80s and upper 70s degrees or lower across a majority of the Central Valley as a breeze rushes in and fall finally says hello.
