Two Chico residents who were killed Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash that injured two other people on Highway 99 in Sutter County, just north of Sacramento County, were identified Wednesday by the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office.

Gabriel Rodriguez Maldonado, 45, and Maria Cristina Alarcon-Abarca, 42, were killed in the collision near Howsley Road, according to the Sheriff’s Office, which responded to the scene for a coroner investigation.
Officers were called to the crash just before 5:30 p.m. on Highway 99, about 5 miles south of East Nicolaus, according to the CHP.

When they arrived, CHP officers found a head-on collision involving two vehicles in the northbound lanes just south of the Cross Canal. According to officers, a white Toyota Corolla was traveling south on Highway 99 when it crossed the dirt median and collided with a northbound Volvo SUV. The Toyota overturned and came to rest in a ditch, the CHP said.
Two people in the Corolla, Maldonado and Alarcon-Abarca, were pronounced dead at the scene. A third person in the Corolla was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center with major injuries. The driver of the Volvo suffered minor injuries and was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, according to authorities.
