Howie Roseman Shuts Down Idea Eagles Are Giving Up on 2026 Season

Following the sudden midseason retirement of Lane Johnson, the Philadelphia Eagles made another drastic move on their offensive line, trading Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens, leading many to wonder if the Eagles are punting on the remainder of the 2026 season. Howie Roseman quickly shut down the notion that the Eagles were conceding the season.

“What happened with Lane is in a separate bucket here. Then you have to make a decision, all right, what’s the value of this, how can this help us going forward? As for the team this year, high expectations for the team this year. It’s very early in the season.”

The Eagles acquired a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick in exchange for Cam Jurgens. By comparison, the Kansas City Chiefs only received a fourth-round pick for four-time All-Pro Joe Thuney. The deal marks the first time an interior offensive lineman has been traded for a second-round selection, a return value Howie Roseman admitted he simply couldn’t turn down.

“We weren’t looking to move Cam,” Roseman said. “Obviously, the Ravens have been looking for a center… Kind of told them wasn’t anything we were looking to do. Over the last 24 hours, it got to the point where we felt like it could be a win-win for them. Obviously, getting a player who’s been a two-time Pro Bowl center and obviously for us, being able to get the picks we’re able to get, and use that money also to sign players.”

It is also important to acknowledge that although Jurgens is coming off of back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances, his level of play on the field has not matched those honors. Through the first four weeks of the season, Jurgens posted a 39.2 PFF grade, ranking 71st among 72 qualified offensive guards.

While some expect Jurgens to magically bounce back at center in Baltimore, his preferred spot over left guard, the truth is his play dipped there last season as well. It’s a decline rooted in the brutal back injury he pushed through during Philadelphia’s 2024 Super Bowl run.

Sure, the Eagles’ offensive line is now younger and less experienced, but moving on from Jurgens in the starting lineup was something many fans had been calling for. Following the trade, Philadelphia now holds four picks in the top 64 of the 2028 NFL Draft and gets to evaluate Willie Lampkin, an undersized but highly talented guard who is coming off an impressive preseason.
