Hall Of Fame Jockey Don Pierce Dies At 89

Hall of Fame rider Don Pierce died at age 89 on Monday, Oct. 5. The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame announced the sad news on Thursday, Oct. 8, on its social media accounts.

Pierce was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010 after a career that saw him as one of the top jockeys of the 1950s and 1960s, riding primarily in California.

Born on April 13, 1937, in Clebit, Okla., Pierce won his first race at the age of 17 in 1954 at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. In 1973, Pierce led all North American jockeys with 32 stakes wins.

Pierce won four editions of the Santa Anita Handicap in 1960, 1962, 1965, and 1972. He also won five consecutive runnings of the Los Angeles Handicap from 1969 to 1973.

Pierce retired in 1984 with 3,546 wins from 28,740 mounts, with purse earnings of $39,018,422. He won 351 stakes during his career. He received the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 1967.
