The state officially recognizes the fourth Friday in September as California Native American Day, which is now a paid state holiday. That holiday fell this year on Sept. 25.
What does the Monday holiday mean for essential services, such as mail delivery, banks, transit and government offices?
Here’s what to know:
Will mail delivery be affected?
U.S. Post Offices will be closed and there will be no mail delivery Monday, Oct. 12, the agency said.
FedEx and UPS services will operate on a modified holiday schedule. FedEx offices will be open, while some UPS offices may have reduced hours.
Will banks be open?
Most Federal Reserve banks and commercial banks will be closed Monday. The U.S. stock market will remain open, but the bond market will be closed.
Will mass transit be available?
Most mass transit agencies, including Regional Transit in Sacramento, will operate on a regular schedule Monday.

Will public libraries be open?
Some California public library systems, such as the one serving Placer County, will be closed Monday. Most Sacramento public library branches are already closed Mondays as part of their regular schedule.
Will trash pickup be affected?
Most scheduled trash pickup will be unaffected by the holiday.
Will schools be open?
Schools in California will be open Monday.
Will government offices be open?
Some city and county offices in California will be closed Monday for the holiday. Emergency services will be available as normal. Sacramento County offices will be closed, but Sacramento city offices will remain open.
State offices will be open as California recognizes Native American Day on Sept. 25 as a paid holiday, not Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Federal government offices and federal courts will be closed for the Monday holiday.
Will supermarkets and retail businesses be open?
Most retail stores, grocery stores and restaurants stay open for the holiday and operate on regular hours.
