Jalen Hurts Refuses to Blame Eagles Coaches After Costly Jaguars Loss

The Philadelphia Eagles have now dropped three in a row following the loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Much of the blame in the recent loss is on the shoulders of Nick Sirianni and the rest of the coaching staff, outside of Vic Fangio. When Jalen Hurts was given an open lane to address the play-calling decisions, he gave a classic Hurts non-answer, carefully avoiding placing any blame.

“It’s not my place. I’m prepared as a QB to not worry about those things. I honor the play call, honor the things that come into the game. When I’m up at night, I think ‘Should I have said something?’ but ultimately there’s a commitment to going out there and executing.”

Hurts and the Eagles offense got the ball with under two minutes remaining, needing just a field goal to take the lead. For the first time in the second half, the offense was able to put multiple plays together, working their way down the field.

Hurts found Dallas Goedert for a 17-yard gain, putting the Eagles in field goal range, with the Jaguars only having one timeout remaining. Logically, the Eagles could have run the ball three straight plays, chewing the clock down and making their field goal attempt the final play of the game.

Instead, the Eagles opted to throw the ball twice, one of which was thrown away and another caught by Makai Lemon for seven yards before he stepped out of bounds, both plays stopping the clock. The idea of throwing the ball is to make the field goal attempt shorter, but Jake Elliott hasn’t missed a kick all year, including two for two from 50+.

When Elliott finally came out and drilled the field goal, the Jaguars still had eight seconds left. Logically, with the Jaguars having no timeouts, the Eagles should have kicked the ball out of the back of the end zone or for a touchback, forcing the Jags to reach field goal range with a single play, especially with the strong performance seen from the Eagles’ defense.

However, the Eagles confusingly opted to allow a return, in which Ameer Abdullah returned the kickoff for 53 yards, putting the Jaguars in field goal range with a second remaining, which Cam Little nailed for the win.

Hurts was nowhere near perfect in the loss, but the coaching staff has consistently made it more difficult for the offense, with poor decision-making and play calls.
