East Carolina vs UAB Prediction: Are the Pirates Back Now?

East Carolina losing to Alabama to start the season was expected, but the 27-24 loss to App State tempered the high expectations before the campaign got off the ground.

But at 0-2, the Pirates pushed past Old Dominion in a 20-17 fight. The Monarchs aren’t that great, though. Neither are NC Central or Rice, the next two wins. UAB is good.

The Blazers lost to a strong Memphis team on the road 38-13, but they held up in a good win over Navy and hung tough with Illinois in a loss. This is a big moment for the Alex Mortensen era and a UAB team that’s 3-0 at home this year.

Why East Carolina Will Win

The Pirates are starting to take the ball away.

The East Carolina offense is fine, but the defense struggled to slow down the App State passing game and wasn’t close against Alabama. The pass D shut down Old Dominion and Rice – both teams kept handing the ball off – and the takeaways changed everything.

ECU has forced seven turnovers in the last three games, and UAB has turned it over five times in the last two weeks and ten times overall.

Why UAB Will Win

Okay, so the East Carolina offense isn’t exactly fine. It’s good on the ground lately, and the passing attack is accurate, but it’s not lighting up the scoreboard, partly because of turnovers: four against NC Central, two against App State, and eight in the first five games.

The bigger issue has been on third downs – the Pirates are 132nd in the nation at converting their third down chances, hitting them at just a 27% rate.

East Carolina vs UAB Prediction, Betting Lines

East Carolina hasn’t faced a slew of teams that can throw, but it’s 0-2 against Alabama and App State offenses that hit over six yards per attempt.

UAB averages close to seven yards per throw, but the offensive front won’t be able to handle a Pirate defensive front that’s No. 1 in the nation in tackles for loss.
