LOS ANGELES – Reach out and feel the drywall. The Dodgers’ backs are up against it.

The plucky little team that doesn’t hit home runs hit three of them off of Blake Snell on Wednesday night. The Milwaukee Brewers handed the Dodgers a 6-2 defeat in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series, pushing the back-to-back champions to the brink of elimination with the possibility of a sweep to avenge the one the Dodgers handed them last year.

Dreams of a three-peat on life support, the Dodgers’ thoughts now have to be on a ‘four-peat’ – it will take four consecutive victories for them to become just the second team in MLB history to come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven series. The 2004 Boston Red Sox (featuring a key stolen base by a reserve outfielder acquired at midseason from the Dodgers) did it in the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees.

Tyler Glasnow is scheduled to start Game 4 on Thursday and try to save the Dodgers’ season. He won’t be able to do it without someone applying paddles to the Dodgers’ flatlining offense.

The Dodgers might not be going down without a fight. But so far, they are going down without any of the things it takes to make an offense successful in the postseason.

They are 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position in this series, 3 for 32 in the postseason. They have just two two-out hits in the three NLCS games (both singles) and only two extra-base hits (both doubles). The Dodgers hit 204 home runs in the regular season (tied for fourth in the National League) and eight more in their four-game National League Division Series victory over the Atlanta Braves (the most in the postseason to that point).

They have hit none in the NLCS and have scored in just five of the 27 innings so far. Four of those five times, the Brewers responded by scoring in the next half-inning themselves.

It happened again to turn Game 3.

Snell hadn’t give up a home run this year but Jackson Chourio sent the first pitch he threw Wednesday into the right-field pavilion. Snell thoroughly dominated the Brewers through six innings after that. He retired 18 of 20 batters after Chourio’s home run, striking out nine. Through the first five innings, the Brewers swung at 32 of Snell’s pitches and missed (17) more times than they made contact.

But the Dodgers’ lifeless offense did nothing against the Brewers’ second consecutive rookie starter, Robert Gasser, who held them scoreless on three hits and a walk through five innings.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy went to his bullpen after that, calling on Abner Uribe for the seventh time in their seven postseason games. When Uribe took the mound, the Brewers’ relievers had pitched 9⅔ scoreless innings in the NLCS and had allowed just one earned run in 28⅔ innings this postseason.

But Uribe walked the bases loaded, retiring just one batter. That brought up Will Smith – 1 for his first 25 this postseason. Smith jumped on a first-pitch fastball from Uribe and lined it off the wall in left-center field for a two-run double and a 2-1 lead.

It was the kind of clutch hit that Smith has provided time and time again over the years and had the stadium rocking.

Murphy made his next move, bringing in left-hander DL Hall with runners at second and third. Hall struck out pinch-hitter Kiké Hernandez and Tommy Edman as the Dodgers failed to capitalize on a chance to break the game open.

Snell went back out for the seventh inning having retired 14 in a row. But he walked Andrew Vaughn to start the inning and bring up Jake Bauers whose 12-pitch walk in the third inning of Game 2 was a critical turning point against Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

He did it again, extending his at-bat against Snell for 11 pitches and sending the last one, a fastball over the heart of the plate, into the right-field seats for a two-run home run. Two pitches later, Snell floated a changeup over the middle and Garrett Mitchell sent it on the same flight path as Bauers’ drive.

In 1,200⅔ career innings (regular season), Snell has only given up 15 home runs to left-handed hitters. Bauers and Mitchell did it back-to-back. The Brewers hit 154 home runs during the regular season, the fewest in the National League. They have outhomered the Dodgers 5-0 in the NLCS.

They added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to pull away.
