Yemeni halal restaurant replaces longtime Brazilian steakhouse in Roseville

A Yemeni restaurant is replacing a longtime Brazilian eatery in Roseville.

Mandi House, 963 Pleasant Grove Blvd., is set to open in December, said owner Faris Alqabass. The California-founded restaurant specializes in Yemeni food and Mandi, a halal dish of slow-cooked meat served on basmati rice.

Mandi House is taking the place of Flame & Fire Brazilian Steakhouse, which closed in April, according to Yelp. Flame & Fire Brazilian Steakhouse operated in Roseville for 12 years.

The signature Mandi dish will feature grilled chicken seasoned with Hawaij, with a smoky Yemeni seasoning of coriander, cumin, black pepper, turmeric and cardamom. The dish is topped with toasted almonds, raisins and onions, according to its online menu.

Other dishes will include lamb haneeth, chicken madhbi, fish mova and hrada of shrimp, a Yemeni fish course cooked in onions, tomatoes and parsley.

All of Mandi House’s food is halal, Alqabass said, served in accordance with Islamic law and dietary ethics.

Mandi House launched in early 2023 while Alqabass was in Los Angeles. Previously, Alqabass was a business owner in New York, operating a variety of food businesses there. But during his trip to Southern California, he felt something was missing.

“I was looking for authentic Arabic food, and I couldn’t find it,” Alqabass said. “And I’m like ‘you know what?’ I think this is going to be a good start.”

The first Mandi House opened in Los Angeles in 2024. It expanded to San Francisco in June, according to the website.

With each restaurant, Alqabass said he focused on serving everyone, not just the Yemeni community, offering cuisine that is inclusive.

“I want people to experience the Yemeni food. I want to bring the culture of Yemenis to American society,” he said.

Hours for the new restaurant have not been finalized, Alqabass said. But other Mandi House locations are typically open from 11 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.
