A 23-year-old Sacramento man will serve eight years in prison for possessing a firearm and intending to distribute fentanyl.

U.S. District Judge John A. Mendez issued the sentence against Gabriel Cabrera on Wednesday in Sacramento federal court.
Investigators found the firearm and fentanyl at Cabrera’s residence during a parole search of the man’s home, according to a release. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Sacramento reported the items were hidden in a room belonging to another resident, although prosecutors said evidence pointed toward the items belonging to the 23-year-old.
“On Cabrera’s cellphone, officers discovered a video of Cabrera holding the same firearm and many messages between Cabrera and other individuals discussing Cabrera’s fentanyl sales,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office wrote in a statement.

Before this case, Cabrera had been convicted of two counts of controlled substance possession, domestic assault and discharging a firearm in a negligent manner, according to an indictment.
He pleaded guilty Sept. 9, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The investigation was a collaboration between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Sacramento Police Department, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
About 35 people have died from fentanyl overdoses this year in Sacramento County, according to data from the Coroner’s Office.
