An 83-year-old Roseville man who was killed in a Memorial Day traffic collision near Roseville High School has been identified by Placer County coroner’s officials.

The collision was reported about 11:30 a.m. Monday on Berry Street between Tiger Way and Reserve Drive, prompting a lengthy road closure while the Roseville Police Department’s accident investigators examined the scene.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office’s coroner division identified the victim as William Swayne.
Lt. Nick Gaines, a spokesperson for the Police Department, said Friday that the cyclist collided with the rear of the vehicle. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, Gaines said. No arrests were made, and investigators determined that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the collision.

Swayne, a native of Reno, was well known in local cycling circles. A described him as an avid cyclist who led group rides nearly every day, “weather permitting.”
The publication reported that Swayne had organized rides ranging from 17 to 25 miles, often ending with a coffee stop, and had spent more than 15 years cycling. The story noted that he traveled to states including Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Florida and Arizona for cycling events and outings.
Roseville police have not released information about the driver involved in the crash, whether any arrests were made or what factors investigators believe contributed to the collision.
