Sophie Cunningham Fires Back at Indiana Fever Fans After Stephanie White Message

The Indiana Fever have garnered as many headlines off the court as on it this season. Despite entering 2026 as one of the WNBA’s title favorites after a 24-20 record and a semifinal appearance in 2025, Indiana has been inconsistent through its first 11 games, sitting at 6-5. Their shaky start has fueled growing speculation about the team’s chemistry and possible tension in the locker room.

One sideline incident during a May 30 loss to the Portland Fire did little to quell the rumors. A fan-captured video appeared to show an animated exchange between Caitlin Clark and head coach Stephanie White during a timeout. The clip, which went viral on social media, showed Clark visibly frustrated after a heated conversation with White, leading some fans to assume the pair’s relationship had become strained.

Monday’s win over the Washington Mystics only added fuel to fire. Trailing by one with 4.3 seconds remaining, Clark received an in-bound pass from Sophie Cunningham before knocking down the game-winning shot.

After the game, Cunningham shared an Instagram carousel celebrating the gritty win. One image included a playful meme that some fans interpreted as suggesting she and Clark had ignored White’s instructions on the decisive possession. The post quickly went viral online, with some using it as further evidence of a disconnect between players and coaching staff.

However, on Tuesday, Cunningham pushed back on the fan theory with an emphatic response on X:

“You guys read too much into things,” Cunningham wrote. “That’s THE EXACT play our coach drew up and we executed it perfectly!”

She is the latest member of the Fever organization to reject the narrative. White addressed the sideline moment after the Portland game, saying it was simply part of the competitive nature of coaching and playing (h/t The Athletic’s James Boyd). Clark echoed her coach’s sentiment, telling reporters the exchange only reflected how much both of them care about winning.

Indiana will look to avoid any distraction at this point in the season and respond to critics on the basketball court. The Fever host the Chicago Sky at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Thursday, with tip off scheduled for 7pm ET.
