Mother’s Day in Sacramento: 7 fun activities around the region (that aren’t brunch)

If Mother’s Day snuck up on you this year, there’s still time to make fun plans without a difficult reservation.

Though brunch is a classic for celebrating the most important women in our lives, the Sacramento region has a wide variety of other activities going on this Mother’s Day weekend, from sporting events to a fruit-filled festival.

Whether Mom prefers to sleep in or wants to make plans for the morning, here are seven things to do in the Sacramento area this Saturday and Sunday.

Sacramento activities for Mother’s Day

Paint and sip

Address: Multiple locations

For a hands-on activity to bond with Mom and bring home a memory of the day spent together, take her to a paint and sip hosted at a number of spots throughout the capital region.

In East Sacramento, Porchlight Brewing Co., 866 57th St., will have an evening paint and sip session starting at 6 p.m. Sunday. Tickets for the brewery’s event cost $40 plus online fees, and admission includes all necessary painting supplies, one free beer or cocktail and a complimentary dessert.

If Sunday is already filled up, some spots have paint and sip nights scheduled on Saturday. Elk Grove’s The Bank Shot, 8535 Elk Grove Blvd., has a family-friendly “Let’s Sip, Paint, and Celebrate Mom!” event 2-4 p.m. Saturday, with painting materials and one free drink included in every $38 ticket.

DIY jewelry making

Address: 805 Riverfront St., West Sacramento

Time: noon-2 p.m. Sunday

Local jewelry business Seodra Jewelry is hosting a clay earring workshop in West Sacramento for Mother’s Day.

According to the event host, no experience is required to participate, and all admissions include the required materials. Tickets are available online, with early-bird pricing at $35 until Thursday. General sale tickets after Thursday will cost $39 per person.

East Sacramento Garden Tour

Address: 3535 M St., Sacramento

Time: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Visit beautiful local gardens, sip on some wine and support a local elementary school with Mom on Sunday in East Sacramento.

The annual East Sacramento Garden Tour, supporting the David Lubin Elementary School, includes a self-guided walking tour of six elaborate gardens around the area of the elementary school, plus additional gardens and a small cafe and boutique hosted on the David Lubin Elementary campus.

Tickets for the walking tour plus access to the school’s market cost $25 online or $30 in person on the event day. Children ages 12 and under get in for free.

The school fundraising team is also setting up a wine garden at the nearby Sutter Lawn Tennis Club, 3951 N St. Admission to the wine garden includes a four-pour wine tasting, and the first 100 visitors will get a souvenir wine glass.

Wine garden tickets cost $25 online ahead of time or $30 on the day of the event, and guests can purchase a combo ticket for the walking tour and wine garden for $50 online.

Raffle tickets with prizes from local businesses will be for sale, costing $5 each or five for $20. All proceeds from admissions and raffle ticket sales will help fun art, music and STEM programs at the East Sacramento elementary school, according to the event’s website.

Placer County Garden Tour

Address: Various locations in Roseville

Time: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday

Out in Roseville, the University of California Master Gardeners of Placer County is hosting its 39th annual local garden tour on Mother’s Day.

For $20 per person — or free for children under 12 — guests can visit six master gardener-created gardens in Placer County. The private gardens feature California native wildflowers, French-inspired floral displays, butterfly gardens and more thoughtful details.

Tickets are available online at the UC Master Gardeners of Placer County website or in-person at three Green Acres Nursery & Supply stores in Auburn, Roseville and Rocklin.

Golden State Valkyries watch party

Address: 1610 R St., Suite 130, Sacramento

Time: 5:30 p.m. Sunday

Though it’s not specific to Mother’s Day, moms who love the WNBA can bring the whole family to Bambina’s in downtown Sacramento to watch the Golden State Valkyries face off against the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday evening.

The Monarch Matchups WNBA watch party community — named after the championship-winning but now-defunct Sacramento Monarchs WNBA team — is kicking off its first season with a pizza party at the pie shop in the Ice Blocks starting at 5:30 p.m., according to the group’s Instagram. The organizers said in a post that they plan to host watch events every few weeks at Bambina’s.

No tickets or basketball knowledge are required to attend.

BerryFest Strawberry Festival

Address: 1250 East Gum Ave., Woodland

Time: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

A local Mother’s Day weekend tradition, BerryFest returns to the Yolo County Fairgrounds this weekend.

Families can enjoy the signature strawberry pancake breakfast starting at 8 a.m., with rides, games, live music and more starting throughout the morning. A car show, strawberry cooking demos, a farmer’s market and a craft fair are among the popular events ongoing during the festival.

Moms can even get a respite from the festivities at the “Mom’s Retreat” area, according to the festival website.

Early-bird admissions cost $15 for visitors aged 14-59 and $7 for guests aged 6-13 and 60+. Children aged 5 and under, veterans and active military members get in for free. Ticket discounts end Wednesday, and full-price tickets will be on sale while supplies last, according to the festival website.

In addition to the plethora of berry celebrations, guests can also purchase tickets to the BerryJam Monster Truck Show, starting at noon on both days of the festival. Tickets are on sale now, costing $35 for guests aged 14 and up and $30 for children aged 3-13, with free entry for toddlers 2 and younger. Pre-sale tickets for the monster truck show are $15 off ahead of the weekend, according to the festival’s website.

K Street Market

Address: 1002 Second St., Sacramento

Time: noon-6 p.m. Sunday

Every Sunday in spring and early summer, the Old Sacramento Waterfront turns K Street into a free, open-air market.

Local vendors, food pop-ups, lawn games and more will be available throughout the afternoon of Mother’s Day for families to enjoy time with Mom. The weekly markets run on Sundays through June 28.
