Hardware sales suffered from a continued housing slump and consumers’ reluctance to spend in uncertain economic conditions in 2025.

Industry leader Home Depot’s sales performance may have been affected by these economic issues, as its sales declined by 3.8% in its fourth quarter of 2025, which ended Feb. 1, 2026.
Home Depot, which dominates the home improvement sector with 28% of the market, according to the Numerator Home Improvement Tracker, however, said its quarterly results met its expectations.
Sales at other hardware stores may not have been adequate, leading to store closures.
Rooster Home & Hardware closes shop
Award-winning cooperative chain store Rooster Home & Hardware True Value in Texas said it will close its popular shop on June 30 after holding a store closing sale.
The Dallas-based, family-owned True Value Hardware store is advertising its Store Closing Sale, offering 50% off on everything through May 31 at its 10233 E. Northwest Highway, No. 409, location.
The store’s owners did not state a reason for closing the shop, according to a May Facebook announcement.
The store, which opened in 2016, has not said what discounts will be offered in its final month.
The hardware store launched a 25%-off-everything sale from May 1 through May 14, but did not call it a closing sale. It increased the discount to 50% on May 15 for the announced closing sale.
The first online mention of the store’s closure came on May 10 from a loyal customer.
Customers comment on closing
“I heard the sad news that Rooster’s is closing,” customer Rachel A. Jackson wrote on Facebook. “This is such a sad loss for Lake Highlands and our community.”
“I shopped Rooster’s weekly and all the staff feel like family. We were told the landlord has other designs for this center,” the message said.

It also won the competition’s Bronze Medal for Best Pet Store in 2022.
The retailer won Gold Awards for Best in DFW People’s Choice for Best Home Improvement Store and Best Pet Store, and a Bronze award for Best Gardening Store/Nursery in 2021.
In addition to hardware, tools, plumbing, electrical, paint, and nursery products, Rooster Home & Hardware features housewares, pets and pet products, gifts, toys, and key cutting.
Customers who are unable to visit the store may purchase merchandise online through Rooster Home & Hardware’s True Value site.
Do it Best stores close
Several Do it Best Hardware stores have closed their shops for various reasons this year.
80-year-old Home Depot rival Miller’s Hardware is shutting down its iconic Winter Park, Fla., store on May 24, after the family-operated business’s owners decided it was time to close the establishment.
Another Do it Best hardware cooperative member, Central Center Hardware in Chillicothe, Ohio, permanently closed down its store on April 10 after operating for 49 years.
The True Value corporation, which is a national cooperative of independently owned hardware stores, was purchased by its competitor, another hardware cooperative, Do it Best, in November 2024.
True Value, however, operates independently of Do it Best.
