The report stated that the man was driving a 2010 Honda Fit west on the highway near Sierra Ski Ranch Road. The driver then made an unsafe turn into the path of an eastward bound 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Sergey Panasenko, 41, of North Highlands, which caused a collision.
The driver of the Honda, whose name wasn’t released pending familial notification, “was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel,” according to the CHP report.
Panasenko was hospitalized with moderate injuries at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

Sgt. Brian Bell of the CHP’s South Lake Tahoe Area office said there was no sign that either driver had been impaired or that criminal charges were unlikely.
Bell said his office had been busy Memorial Day weekend, also making two DUI arrests, including one that caused serious injury.
“I can’t stress enough to encourage the public to be extra cautious and be aware of their surroundings and report any dangerous driving to the highway patrol,” Bell said.
