Check back to sanluisobispo.com for updates. <br \/> To get breaking news alerts, click here<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegorelocationnews.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/08\/1-killed-1-critically-wounded-after-being-shot-by-guard-during-sacramento-break-in\/\">1 killed, 1 critically wounded after being shot by guard during Sacramento break-in<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The search for Kristin Smart at the Arroyo Grande home of convicted killer Paul Flores\u2019 mother continued into its third day Friday as the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff\u2019s Office shared its first update on what\u2019s happening at the site.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>In a wide-ranging news conference Friday morning, Sheriff Ian Parkinson said investigators believe they have found evidence of human remains at Susan Flores\u2019 Arroyo Grande home in the continuing search for Smart, who went missing nearly 30 years ago on Memorial Day weekend of 1996.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that based on what we\u2019re looking at \u2014 evidence-wise, scientific evidence \u2014 that human remains were there at one time or are still there,\u201d Parkinson said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Susan Flores is the mother of Paul Flores, who was convicted in 2022 of killing Smart when she was a first-year student at Cal Poly.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>She has never been charged with a crime associated with Kristin Smart\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Follow The Tribune for today\u2019s live updates from the scene:<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>New tarps cover part of Flores house, shovels taken into yard<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Activity Wednesday and Thursday at the site was focused largely around soil sampling and ground penetrating radar, as well as a search of the home.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Friday, however, saw some new developments.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Tarps were installed along several edges of the Branch Street property early Friday morning, blocking off the view of portions of the Flores backyard from view.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>During the media conference Friday morning, Parkinson said those were in place to shield the work, \u201csealing it from public view.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not something is being hidden,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the fact that we don\u2019t want people guessing what we\u2019re doing. We need to work in peace, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re doing now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>At 11 a.m., a Sheriff\u2019s Office investigator unloaded at least three shovels from a county vehicle and brought at least two into the backyard. During the press conference, Parkinson said that any digging up of the yard would require a new, separate \u201cpiggyback\u201d search warrant signed by a judge. \u201cA judge is giving you permission to do certain things,\u201d Parkinson said. \u201cYou have to find probable cause to do the next step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>Sheriff\u2019s Office gives first public comments since start of search<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a Friday morning press conference in his first public communication since the start of the search, Parkinson said investigators believe they have found evidence of human remains at Susan Flores\u2019 home.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that based on what we\u2019re looking at \u2014 evidence-wise, scientific evidence \u2014 that human remains were there at one time or are still there,\u201d Parkinson said.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>However, Parkinson said while his office believes it has seen evidence of human remains at the site, he could not yet specify whether it was Smart\u2019s remains.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Ground penetrating radar has detected anomalies in the ground, but those anomalies have not been analyzed to determine if they are of interest to the case at this time, Parkinson said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Parkinson said Susan Flores remains a \u201cperson of interest\u201d in the case \u201cas she always has been,\u201d but he noted that they do not have \u201ca lawful reason to detain her at this point.\u201d Procurement of evidence that points to her involvement could result in charges as an accessory to murder, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegorelocationnews.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/08\/new-ca-law-speeds-process-but-schools-have-long-reckoned-with-racist-names-logos\/\">New CA law speeds process, but schools have long reckoned with racist names, logos<\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the problem with this case from the very beginning was most people that had read the case believe they knew about the case,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was always their feeling was based on belief, and as I repeat it to the Smarts many times, it\u2019s not what we believe, it\u2019s what we can prove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>He also said it would be possible for Ruben Flores\u2019 home to be searched again if evidence points to it, though his previous acquittal in 2022 would make it harder to charge him with a crime due to double jeopardy rules that prevent people from being tried for the same crime multiple times.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything is open,\u201d he said. \u201cKristin has been moved, and we don\u2019t know how many times she\u2019s been moved, and where she\u2019s been moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>What to know about Kristin Smart case, search<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>In a news release Wednesday, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff\u2019s Office said it was conducting an investigation into the property in the 500 block of East Branch Street in Arroyo Grande.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The investigation was \u201cthe result of a search warrant signed by a Superior Court judge,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sheriff\u2019s Office remains committed to bringing Kristin home to her family,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Denise Smart, Kristin Smart\u2019s mother, has previously said that the case will not be over for the family until her daughter\u2019s remains are found and returned home.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no finality for us,\u201d she told The Tribune in January following Paul Flores\u2019 final appeal being denied.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Smart family has not issued a statement.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Susan Flores\u2019 Arroyo Grande home has become a prominent point of interest in the push to find Kristin Smart\u2019s remains \u2014 especially after a group of scientists in 2023 announced a soil vapor sampling study saying they had discovered evidence of a \u201chuman decomposition event\u201d emitting from the property\u2019s yard.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday and Thursday, many of those scientists including Hoyt, environmental engineer Tim Nelligan and former FBI chemist Brian Eckenrode were at the scene conducting sampling tests of the soil.
