The sales were part of a larger nationwide sale of customers\u2019 data to two data brokers, Verisk Analytics, Inc., and LexisNexis Risk Solutions.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The investigation\u2019s findings echo those of a 2024 New York Times report that revealed drivers\u2019 insurance prices were increasing based on data they didn\u2019t know General Motors was collecting. The California Privacy Protection Agency had begun an investigation into automakers\u2019 data collection practices at the time the article was published.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Unlike drivers in other states, California drivers\u2019 wallets didn\u2019t seem to be affected by the data sharing, due to a 1988 law Californians passed called Proposition 103, which prohibits insurance companies from setting rates based on driver data. It also required the company to allow customers to opt out of data collection, obtain data reports and get their data deleted. Many of those same provisions are included in California\u2019s settlement.
