Camp Tuolumne Trails in Groveland, about 60 miles east of Modesto, is closing after 18 years of providing an \u201caccommodating and fully accessible\u201d recreational and educational space for individuals with disabilities and those who support them, according to its website.<\/p>\n

Jerry and Paula Baker opened the summer camp in 2008 after retiring to the Sierra foothills. They saw the camp as a way to give back.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cMany years before, the seed of supporting children with special needs was planted when their youngest son was diagnosed with a brain tumor,\u201d the website says. \u201cWhile all turned out well, the traumatic experience of caring for a seriously ill child gave them a perspective that would affect the rest of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Camp activities included arts and crafts, adapted sports, gold panning, nature studies, fishing, archery, campfires and stargazing.<\/p>\n

Summer 2025 was, unexpectedly, the camp\u2019s last program. That spring, Jerry Baker was diagnosed with brain cancer and also suffered a stroke, according to the website.<\/p>\n

The hope was that the camp would be able to continue under a new executive director. Instead, challenges and \u201cunforeseen circumstances\u201d caused Camp Tuolumne Trails to cease operations and be listed for sale.<\/p>\n
