No staff, no political party, no social media presence and no budget beyond the $10,000 personal loan he took out to help get his name on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Still, as better-known candidates pour millions of dollars into the race, DeMott, the former owner of a Northern California pest control empire, and several dozen other low-profile gubernatorial hopefuls are betting they can defy the odds and pull off a June 2 primary day miracle.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Only two candidates, regardless of party, will advance from the primary that includes 61 names. DeMott plans to be one of them.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I get in the top two, then the race would really start,\u201d DeMott said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>California has been a magnet for unorthodox political leaders at least since 1859, when San Francisco resident Joshua Abraham Norton anointed himself \u201cEmperor of these United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>If ever there was a year for an upset, this is it. A month out from the primary, there\u2019s still no clear frontrunner. Even the highest polling candidates, like Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra, struggle to clear 20% support in most surveys.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s left a hypothetical opening for dreamers willing to splash out the $4,918.58 filing fee \u2014 or find 6,000 signatures \u2014 that were required to appear on this year\u2019s ballot.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>There are a dizzying amount of options for the adventurous voter. Ballots include 24 Democrats (including at least two, Eric Swalwell and Betty Yee, who have suspended their campaigns), a dozen Republicans, one Libertarian Party member, one representative of the socialist Peace and Freedom Party and 23 candidates labeled as \u201cno party preference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>That last camp includes Anne Komarovsk, a Malibu antitax activist who said she\u2019s aiming to become the state\u2019s first nonpartisan governor. Komarovsk said she\u2019ll be a moderating voice in an era of fierce partisanship, or as she calls it, \u201cpolitical gang violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Komarovsk is campaigning largely through her YouTube channel, where Komarovsk discusses current events, her affection for the $2 bill or queries AI \u2014 or what she calls \u201cangel intelligence mode\u201d \u2014 made about the meaning of the 2015 film \u201cCell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Then there are candidates here for the larger struggle, like Margaret Trowe of the Socialist Workers Party. Trowe, who works in housekeeping at a hotel in Berkeley, has spent decades in the labor movement and sees a capitalist system that\u2019s nearing its breaking point.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe working class is really getting hammered,\u201d Trowe said. \u201cI believe there will be a socialist revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>She stressed that the coming \u201cAmerican revolution\u201d would be nonviolent \u2014 \u201ca mass movement of millions of workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Republican Randeep Dhillon is taking a different tack with social media videos featuring his MACA slogan: \u201cMake affordable California again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The economist and business owner may be the only candidate in the race to film a promotional video in a cemetery, where he promised that as governor, his office would cover up to $15,000 in funeral expenses. In another clip, he says his administration would subsidize the sales tax and registration payments for the first car for high schoolers who maintain a GPA of 3.87.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><svg><g><g><g><\/g><\/g><\/g><\/svg><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>View this post on Instagram<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<p>A post shared by Dr. Randeep S. Still, the attention they\u2019ve garnered boosted his confidence headed into the primary.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the election is today, I\u2019m winning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Some of the candidates, like Los Angeles entrepreneur Max Fomin, have heard from naysayers who believe they can\u2019t win. Fomin\u2019s skeptics include his brother, his parents and his ex-wife.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>But Fomin is betting fortune favors the bold. Residents would get psychiatric treatment if they needed it, showers and mandatory work. Fomin, who himself lived out of a van for around a year, conceded the plan \u201cmight sound a little extreme\u201d but argues residents will \u201cfeel rejuvenated each time they take a shower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Other candidates share Fomin\u2019s critique, if not his tone.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Republican Rafael Hernandez argues \u201cthe whole system is broken\u201d in California and would work to address homelessness, albeit with a sunnier spin.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to make it the greatest state with lots of jobs, peace and respect for everybody,\u201d Hernandez said.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Hernandez grew up on his grandfather\u2019s ranch outside Mexico City and moved to the U.S. as an adult, later gaining citizenship and managing operations at gas stations. Now retired, Hernandez may be the field\u2019s snazziest dresser, favoring bold patterned-shirts with spread collars, blazers that pop and the occasional cowboy hat.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<div> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A82qaR0eG6Q?si=-jhiRvSePzfq4axk\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Republican has leaned on his songwriting to spin out Spanish and English versions of a homemade campaign song (refrain: \u201cI want to be, I want to be your governor\u201d) that he sang to a reporter over the phone. He also, unprompted, offered up his heart or kidney to a reporter if it was ever needed.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHumans need to help people,\u201d Hernandez said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Arguably the biggest alternative candidate isn\u2019t on the ballot: Green Party nominee Butch Ware, whom a judge ruled didn\u2019t turn in his tax returns in time to make the cut. A federal court judge also rejected Ware\u2019s attempt to get his name added to ballots. His campaign is encouraging supporters to write in his name.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Ware is a professor of African and Islamic history at the University of California-Santa Barbara who ran as the party\u2019s vice presidential nominee in 2024. His platform calls for taking over vacant corporate-owned homes, single-payer healthcare, free higher education, and divesting state pensions from weapons manufacturers and companies tied to war crimes.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Other candidates have names that jump off the ballot: Thunder Parley, Barack D. Obama Shaw, and, of course, LivingforGod AndCountry DeMott.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>DeMott\u2019s name change predates any run for office. Born Mark David, DeMott pivoted to Marcus Aurelius David (pronounced DAH-veed) DeMott, in a nod to the Roman emperor because \u201ceveryone called me that.\u201d He said he changed his name again after the movie theater where he worked asked him to stop speaking about his Christian faith to patrons; DeMott reasoned they couldn\u2019t stop him from invoking God\u2019s name if it was baked into his legal name.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Shaw \u2014 no relation to his political namesake \u2014 adopted the then-president\u2019s name in 2013 as a way to honor the hope he felt the Democrat brought to the world. It was also a nickname he\u2019d gotten from fellow soldiers in the U.S. Army who called him Barack Denzel, in a nod to actor Denzel Washington.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The Alameda resident, who ran for mayor of the town in 2022, was blunt about his name\u2019s ballot box potential.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have told me, \u2018I always vote for Barack Obama,\u2019\u201d the Democrat said. \u201cSo they\u2019re going to vote for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Shaw id sahe\u2019ll work with President Donald Trump to unlock an extra $24 billion in federal assistance to California.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the \u2018get money for California\u2019 candidate,\u201d Shaw said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Parley said he adopted \u201cThunder\u201d when he moved to California decades ago, taking up an old childhood nickname.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The former Google engineer calls his name \u201cthe least interesting thing about me.\u201d Take out the name, and the Democrat sounds a lot like better-known candidates; in fact, he accused San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan of lifting some of his talking points. Mahan\u2019s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Parley\u2019s platform calls for slashing red tape, reigning in state spending and harnessing what he sees as a coming AI boom to make California \u201cthe AI capital of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Parley has plowed $133,000 of his own money into the race \u2014 or less than 0.1% of the $161 million that billionaire Tom Steyer has invested in his own candidacy. Like most of the other candidates on the ballot, Parley hasn\u2019t registered in the polls.
